Mini Adventure: King's Palace, Luang Prabang

Updated: Jan 30, 2022

Luang Prabang is recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site for its unique blend of colonial European architecture and historical Lao culture. It is a popular place for monks to study Buddhism and take part in religious restoration projects for the city.

We visited the King’s Palace, which has been transformed into the National Museum of Luang Prabang. You can explore the King’s Palace, a temple, and a car museum which contains the original Royal cars which were used by the family for various activities.

The property is massive and hosts music and theatrical events throughout the week. Inside the palace, you can view the King and Queen’s reception hall, which has huge paintings of the Lao monarchy, as well as a mural along an entire wall that depicts traditional Lao life, from the King and Queen to the agricultural farmers.

The intricate designs and paintings are displayed all throughout the palace, and you can see that there is no such thing as “too much gold” for the Royal Family.

It was a nice way to spend a few hours and escape the intense heat. The entrance fee was 20,000 kip ($2 USD). Remember to dress conservatively, as there is a temple on-site and it is a religious establishment.
